C-MINE
Genk, BE
Restauration and reconversion of old coal mine of Winterslag, Genk into cultural and tourist infrastructure The original building is composed of a solid and rather dark base topped with naturally lit machine rooms. The first intervention consists of a subtle restoration with respect towards the industrial heritage such as the monumental building complex and the several old machines and installations. The old complex will house a design museum, a restaurant and café, a tourist information center, a large foyer and will provide access to the Mine Experience (visit of the existing shafts). The second intervention is the addition of two new venue halls in the armpits of the old T-shaped complex; a big theatre hall (500 spectators) and a smaller concert hall (200 spectators), combined with an exhibition space. These additions follow the base/machine rooms logic of the old building. The new ‘piano nobile’ offers a new reading of the whole, as well as spectacular views on the nearby coal tip.
